For the second week in a row at the ATP Masters 1000 event, Marin reached the third round, this time at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Trying to advance to the quarter-finals, he fell short to Stan Wawrinka from Switzerland, losing in three sets, but showed some impressive tennis in the opening set. Wawrinka, who again played some of the best tennis against Marin, as he did earlier this year in Monte Carlo, prevailed by 3/6, 60, 6/1 and kept Marin short of advancing to Cincinnati quarter-finals for the second time in a row.
In the two opening rounds, against Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco, Marin did not lose serve. Playing in the first round against Lopez (ATP 16), who was semi-finalist in Toronto the week before, Marin won by 6/3, 6/4. On the next day, he beat Verdasco by 7/6, 7/6.
Playing against Wawrinka, Marin suffered from an arm injury, but after one week of rest should be ready for the last Grand Slam event of the year, US Open in New York, starting on the August 25th.
