Two great weeks of tennis have culminated with title #20 for Marin as he overcame Taylor Fritz in the St. Petersburg Open final. The last time Marin played the St. Petersburg Open was 2011, when he also took home the title. A decade later he has reclaimed the top prize and joined elite company as 1 of only 6 active players that have at least 20 tour-level titles.
Marin dedicated this trophy to his newborn son, Vito, born in early September. “Coming 10 years after winning in 2011 and also winning now, it’s so, so special for me, especially this part of my career,” Cilic said during the trophy ceremony. “Having now a family, two sons, I want to absolutely dedicate this trophy to my newborn son.”
Marin leaves Russia on a high, having played two finals in two weeks, losing the VTB Kremlin Cup final to Aslan Karatsev before taking the title in St. Petersburg. Next up for Marin is the final tournament of the season, the Rolex Paris Masters, which begins this week.
