Rogers Cup in Toronto: Big Battle with Federer and Semi-Finals in Doubles

Playing at 6th ATP Masters 1000 event of the year, Marin reached the third round in Singles competition, where he lost in a tight battle against Roger Federer from Switzerland. In Doubles, playing with Santiago Gonzalez, he went all the way to the semi-finals. It was the fourth time in his career that he reached the last four at this tournament level.

In both first and second round, Marin needed three sets to prevail. Against Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan he won by 6/2, 4/6, 7/5 and against Malek Jaziri from Tunisia score was 4/6, 6/0, 7/6. Then it was the third round against Federer (7/6, 6/7, 6/4).
“The match I played against Federer was the best one I played in Toronto and one of the best overall, considering the intensity and the fact that Roger played very well. It was decided in the last two games. Anyway, first two matches were great for adjustment from clay court to hard court and I had a feeling I was better day by day”, Marin said.

Speaking about being so close to defeat Roger for the first time, Marin added :
“It was yet another match this season I came close to win against one of the highest-ranked players in the world. It gives me confidence for what comes next. It shows how well I play and I feel I am not far away from winning in such a big match. It is just a question of time when I will be able to make such a step.”
